Farhan Akhtar backed Manipuri film Boong to open Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025 as Spotlight film
Boong marks the directorial debut of Lakshmipriya Devi, who brings extensive experience from her work as the first assistant director on several acclaimed projects including Luck by Chance, Talaash, Aamir Khan’s PK, and Mira Nair’s internationally recognized series A Suitable Boy. Her transition from behind-the-scenes roles to helming a film reflects a significant milestone in her filmmaking career.
Known for showcasing culturally rich and groundbreaking Indian cinema, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne’s 2025 edition emphasizes diversity, originality, and bold narratives. The selection of Boong as the Spotlight Film underscores Excel Entertainment’s ongoing commitment to fostering new talent and supporting unique cinematic voices.
Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange commented on the film’s selection, saying, “We are thrilled to present the world premiere of Boong as this year’s Spotlight Film. It’s a story that is as bold as it is intimate, and Lakshmipriya Devi’s debut is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary talent working behind the scenes in Indian cinema. IFFM has always been committed to championing new voices, and Boong is exactly the kind of story that resonates globally — deeply rooted in its context yet universally human in its emotion.”
With its sensitive and visionary direction, Boong reflects Devi’s distinctive storytelling approach and her years of industry experience. The film’s premiere at IFFM 2025 is poised to introduce a fresh perspective in Indian filmmaking, highlighting voices from regional cinema that often remain underrepresented on international platforms.
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne continues to serve as a premier event for Indian cinema to reach wider audiences, bringing together filmmakers and enthusiasts from across the world. The 2025 edition promises to spotlight films that push creative boundaries while celebrating India’s rich cultural tapestry.
This announcement adds to Excel Entertainment’s legacy of producing compelling films that emphasize strong narratives and innovative filmmaking, further cementing their role as influential champions of Indian cinema’s evolving landscape.
